Umbrellas are easy to overlook when initially playing the game. It is located on the stairs to the left of the main hall in the foyer. Do not answer the door once you have accepted the task of a giant spirit.

First, take the stairs and sit against a lamp-post so you can play forever. To be on the safe side, try not to brandish your sword until you have equipped your umbrella.
